With Ellen by his side, JL was an avid traveller, visiting every corner of the planet together… though none were as exotic as Swindon! One of JL’s favourite things to do on holiday was to find the perfect spot for a silly photo that in more recent years he would post on Instagram. Giant vegetables in New Zealand, holding hands with a bear Mountie in Canada, pretending to surf Wave Rock in Australia, being a cosmonaut in Moscow or fake serious posing in Tokyo. His absolute favourite was the one of him stood in the field of lupins, Can you find him?

RUSSIA

June 2019

We’d wanted to go to Russia for a really long time, and we finally made it and visited St Petersburg and Moscow with a trip on the train in between the two. I remember John-Luke being really happy the whole time we were there, not that he wasn’t always happy on our trips, but this one in particular stands out. I think because it was a combination of culture and history that he was interested in, quirky things to do, as well as some amazing hot weather that he always loved. We were both really into the cosmonautic history so spent a lot of time visiting museums and sites related to that - as well as getting the classic cosmonaut pic JL used as his instagram picture (see permanent gallery at top of page). John-Luke loved the Stalinist architecture in Moscow, especially the VDNK exhibition park built to show off the USSR’s different geographical assets. We also had an amazing day inside the complex of the Kremlin, which neither of us realised was much more than one building, with multiple incredible churches, gardens, and museums inside the red walls  It was midsummer so the sun never fully set, and we got some great pictures of the dusk at midnight in Red Square. The Winter Palace and Peterhof were the highlights of St Petersburg, as well as the Faberge museum, despite all being insanely busy. We saw the world’s longest escalator and some beautifully decorated underground stations in both cities; and found soviet era arcade machines to play.  I remember being pretty exhausted when we got home, it was basically two packed city breaks back to back. But it was definitely worth it.
